JOY AND SORROW
I have been having mixed emotions , some of joy and some of sorrow. I was thinking to my self how can one feel both these emotions at the same time. I came across this in the book "The Prophet " By Kahlil Gibran and wanted to share it with my friends. the meaning of joy and sorrow.
Your joy is your sorrow unmasked.
And the same well from which your laughter rises was often times filled with tears
The deeper that sorrow carves into your being,
The more joy you can contain
Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potters oven?
And is not the lute that soothes your spirit,
The very wood that was hollowed with knives?
When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find,
it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy.
And when you are sorrowful look again in your heart,
And you shall see that in truth you are weeping
for that which has been your delight.
Some of you say "Joy is greater than sorrow" and others say "Sorrow is greater"
But I say they are inseperable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.

Also he said
"Only great sorrow or great joy can reveal your truth.
If you would be revealed you must either dance naked in the sun, or carry your cross".
Great poem and so true. I think I'll read 'The Prophet' again. And I see that you too had flowers as ur previous post. Its so nice to get up in the morning and look at flowers. :)
Thank you jac. but how can you feel sorrow and joy at the same time.
Thank you suji. It is nice to see the flowers, I think it makes for a good start in the morning.
Thank you Alexis. I think he was really wise. there is so much truth to what he says.
Oh So good! This really helps when you are sorrowful....gives some hope, makes you optimistic..but if you are brimming with joy, doesnt the poem sound ominous? Or should we think, 'it is because I have experienced sorrow that I can experience this joy'? Perhaps....
The photos of flowers are very good. What a joy to see them every morning! I clicked some snaps of the various flowers I see when I go for walks, I will put them up soon!
Astounding....They really are inseparable I guess....beautiful words shared by you....Good pick and smart reader you are!! :)
Anu..I guess there is some truth to this that you have to have experienced sorrow to experience joy.
please post the flowers that u clicked. I love flowers, I think you forget your sorrow when u see flowers.
Thank you scribblez. They are inseperable even though we always want to experience joy without experiencing sorrow.
Everyone can, as I do sometimes.
Hey, thanks for posting this, it`s so true and strikes chord, Such lines help a lot in handling both joy and sorrow equally.
Great Post!
Regards,
Srijith.
umm..i think we all feel mix emotions sometimes..i do..and it's so crazy feeling..every time this "mix emotions" strikes me..i would feel so lost..and so confused..
l-o-v-e-l-y blog post! ;;)
Wow.
I never lookd at joy and sorrow as companions. i mean, i knew that they r two sides of the same coin. But that they co-exist at the same time ?
Well, this sure needs some serious consideration
Thanks for introducing the concept.
Must read this book
Can we give sorrow a few sleeping tablets :) maybe like forever ;)
"But I say they are inseperable.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you remember that the other is asleep upon your bed."
so true. i love the works of kahlil gibran, truly prophetic.
Together they come, and when one sits alone with you remember that the other is asleep upon your bed.****Absolutely
Wow! Thats a lovely post & makes good read. Thanx for sharing. :)
Srijith...thanks for visiting my blog and please do come again.
Shine. I understand what you feel because right now thats what I am feeling. sorrow and joy.did not know that they can be together.
Ajay..I just found that out that you can feel both these emotions AT THE SAME TIME.amazing isnt it.Read the book .he has some wise sayings.
Mindinside. yes there is nothing as pure as love.but even with that you sometimes feel joy and sorrow.
Raj..would it not be nice. I would give sorrow an overdose of sleeping pills. but I am told that if you do not experience sorrow then you would not appreciate joy.
Richunderconstruction...truly inseperable
Southpaw..Yes it is true that while we are experiencing joy ,sorrow is always lurking in the shadow.
Has to be me..Thank you.I wanted to know what others feel about the experience of joy and sorrow.
I havn't read "Prophet". I should.
Yes, indeed, joy and sorrow are inseparable. But what makes us feel happy or sad ?
All is in US, be it happiness or sadness...Life has to be taken in a postive way...
As Lord Krishna said to Arjuna in the battlefield 'whatever you took from here(the earth) belonged to somebodyelse before and it will belong to somebodelse after you leave ...whatever happened it is for good and whatever is happening now it is for good and whatever will happen it is also for good'...
I know itis difficult...we are all just humans !!! Hence the joy and the sorrow...
One man's trash is another man's treasure - let's not forget that...that's how things are !
Cool post! Made me think!
Remined me again of how much I love "the prophet"...
I completely relate to all that it says..about freindship..love..
Beautiful and so true...
lovely post :)
Sorrow is the shadow of Joy, and always follows it whereever it goes. Everyone's life is like a roller-coaster ride, with ups and downs. I don't think sorrow is joy, but they're truely inseparable.
I am glad you found Gibran. I have most of his books and I consider them to be the only thing I own in this world.. I absolutely adore kahlil Gibran..
To those of you want to read his other poems
it can be seen here

"The Prophet" not only adornes your personal Library, but the words and meaning will adorne your hearts for a lifetime.
Everyone should buy and read it once in a while - it is a real treasure
Another pick would be Khayyam's Rubaiyat
"Awake, my Little ones, and fill the Cup
"Before Life's Liquor in its Cup be dry."
Marthyan thank you. I think I am going to read the book"Khayyam's Rubaiyat"
You said -
bad things happen to good people.
I say -
bad things happen to bad people too.
Hold your head high and walk straight...people shall admire you.
God! I say this to many fiends of mine, but when I have some trouble...I just go shattered into many pieces. So , I think I should start saying such things to myself first...
Thank you Prash I am going to hold my head up and walk straight. thanks.
I like that picture!
